Homocysteine is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease. The risk for Alzheimer’s dementia doubled when plasma levels went above 14; the proposed mechanism is arterial damage from free radicals in the heart and brain.
Risk factors for homocysteine elevation include those individuals with liver or kidney disease or with inborn homocysteine metabolism errors. Renal transplant recipients are noted for increased homocysteine levels and coronary artery disease. Those on vitamin supplementation dropped their homocysteine level an average of 22 points.
The Swiss Heart study followed post angioplasty patients, and those on vitamin supplementation showed a 34% decrease in risk for death, nonfatal heart attack, and repeated vascularization.
Diet and lifestyle factors influence homocysteine levels. Smoking and coffee consumption of more than 4 cups of coffee daily elevate levels. Ingestion of some pharmaceuticals (thiazide diuretics, estrogen, metformin) can raise homocysteine levels beyond normal, leading to adverse outcomes. Levels rise if dietary levels of B6, B12, and folic acid are low in the diet.
Cardio B contains therapeutic doses of B6, B12, and a full 5 mg of folic acid, making it the supplement of choice for lowering homocysteine levels.
