Probiotics literally translated means “for life,” which signifies the health- promoting effects of these friendly intestinal bacteria. Humans are not born with lactobacilli (friendly bacteria) in their intestinal tract, but we must cultivate and maintain healthy levels throughout our lives. Intestinal flora probiotics are directly involved in our nutritional status, cholesterol metabolism, and anti-cancer and anti-aging activities. Probiotic use is essential, as they have been referred to as our second immune system. Studies have shown direct correlation between probiotic use and a variety of produced factors that inhibit and antagonize bad bacterial and viral growth. Some of the conditions probiotics can prevent and improve are vaginal yeast infections, risk of colon cancer, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel, radiotherapy-associated diarrhea, and colic in infants.
By increasing intestinal health, lactobacilli counteract inflammation outside the intestinal tract in cases of eczema and dermatitis. New studies show women who eat yogurt more frequently have a lower risk of breast cancer.
Unfortunately, probiotic bacteria do not colonize in the colon and need to be replenished by supplementation of foods containing these bacteria. When choosing a supplement, one must keep in mind that the harsh acid environment of the stomach kills most of these beneficial organisms. That is why it is important to choose a product with patented True Delivery Technology, which keeps the probiotic bacteria in an acid resistant pearl, passing through the stomach and dissolving in the intestine. Lab tests show 90% survival of microflora in probiotic pearls compared to 5% of other leading brands when exposed to simulated stomach environment. I have seen this result many times in my office with patients who do not show benefits of probiotic use when taking other brands. Their stool analysis show no live probiotics present.
Probiotics are extremely safe and have no known side effects.
